The Inkwell editor is free forever. Quill, your AI writing partner, runs on credits. This guide explains how credits work, how to try Quill free, and how to keep using it.

How Credits Work

One rule, and it’s simple: you only spend credits when Quill answers. A brainstorm, a rewrite, a note, a formatting question — you’re charged only when Quill actually responds. A typical answer costs a few credits; longer or more complex requests cost more. Nothing else costs anything. Credits are not spent when you:
  • ❌ Write, format, or paginate your script
  • ❌ Import or export (PDF, Fountain, FDX)
  • ❌ Type in the Quill panel without sending
  • ❌ Send a request that errors out before Quill answers
There’s nothing to set up or configure — Quill is ready the moment you open the panel. And because the editor is free, you only ever spend credits when you actually get an answer back.

How to Get Credits

There are no standing free credits — no signup bonus, no monthly free allowance. You get Quill credits one of three ways:

Try Quill free — the free week

Every new account can start a free week of Quill Pro:
  • 500 credits to spend on Quill
  • 7 days
  • No credit card, nothing to cancel
  • Opt-in — one tap after you sign in
When the week ends, you drop back to the free editor with no Quill credits. Nothing is charged, nothing is deleted, and your scripts are untouched. To keep using Quill, buy a credit pack or subscribe.

Credit packs — $4.99 for 150

If you’d rather not subscribe, a one-time 150-credit pack is $4.99 — no recurring charge. Pack credits never expire.

Quill Pro — 10/monthor10/month or 100/year

Quill Pro gives you 500 credits every month for 10/month,or10/month**, or **100/year (save $20/year). Credits refresh on your billing date. Pro is the same Quill — just a larger, recurring budget so you never run out mid-draft. Upgrade to Pro in Settings → Account or at inkwell.app/pro.
A user with no active trial or subscription and no credit pack has 0 Quill credits — and the editor still works fully. Credits only gate Quill answers, never your writing.

Make your credits count

A typical answer costs a few credits, and bigger requests cost more — so the way to stretch credits is simply to ask well: Be specific. A focused question (“rewrite this exchange to feel more like Sorkin”) gets a useful result on the first try, so you don’t spend another round of credits on a clarifying follow-up. Stay in the same thread. Quill remembers the conversation, so a follow-up like “make it darker” builds on what came before instead of starting over. Attach files once. If you attach a script or reference PDF early in a conversation, Quill keeps it for the whole thread — no need to re-attach.

Credit Deduction Rules

Credits are spent when:
  • ✅ You send a message to Quill and Quill answers (a few credits per answer, more for bigger requests)
Credits are not spent when:
  • ❌ You type in the Quill panel without sending
  • ❌ A request fails or errors before Quill answers
  • ❌ You write, format, import, or export — those are always free
Once Quill answers, the credits for that answer aren’t refundable, even if you don’t love the result. Refine your prompt before sending if you’re not sure what you want.

Ways to Use Quill at a Glance

The editor itself is free and unlimited on all of the above — credits only ever apply to Quill answers.
