Quill AI uses a credit system to track AI usage. Each request costs credits based on the model you choose. This guide explains how credits work and how to manage them.

How Credits Work

Every time you send a request to Quill AI, credits are deducted from your account based on:
  1. The AI model you’re using (different models have different costs)
  2. One credit per request (not per word or token)

Lower-cost models (0.25-0.5 credits) are perfect for quick edits and everyday writing. Save higher-cost models for complex rewrites.

Check Your Credit Balance

Your current credit balance is always visible in Inkwell: In the Status Bar (bottom-right corner):
  • Shows your remaining credits
  • Updates in real-time after each request
In the Quill AI Panel:
  • Credit count appears near the model selector
  • Click to see detailed usage information

Free Plan Credits

The free plan includes:
  • 100 credits per month
  • Resets on the 1st of each month
  • Access to all AI models
What you can do with 100 free credits:
  • ~400 requests with GPT-4.1 mini (0.25 each)
  • ~200 requests with GPT-4o Mini (0.5 each)
  • ~100 requests with GPT-4o or Gemini 2.5 flash (1.0 each)
Credits do not roll over. Unused credits expire at the end of each month.

Pro Plan Credits

The Pro plan includes:
  • 1,000 credits per month
  • Resets on your billing date
  • Access to all AI models
  • Priority support
Upgrade to Pro in Settings → Account or at inkwell.app/pro

Purchase Additional Credits

If you run out of credits before your reset date, you can purchase more:

Open Settings

Go to Inkwell → Settings (macOS) or File → Settings (Windows)

Navigate to Account

Click the Account tab

Purchase Credits

Click Buy Credits and choose a package:
  • 100 credits
  • 500 credits
  • 1,000 credits

Complete purchase

Enter payment details and confirm. Credits are added immediately.
Purchased credits never expire and can be used anytime, even after your monthly allocation resets.

  • Date and time
  • Model used
  • Credits consumed
  • Remaining balance

Optimize credit usage:
  • Use lower-cost models (GPT-4.1 mini, GPT-4o Mini) for routine tasks
  • Reserve expensive models for complex rewrites
  • Review Quill’s suggestions before accepting to avoid unnecessary follow-ups
Track your patterns:
  • Check Credit History weekly to see which models you use most
  • Adjust your model choice based on actual needs vs. costs

Credit Deduction Rules

Credits are deducted when: ✅ You send a message to Quill AI ✅ Quill responds successfully ✅ You use inline collaboration features Credits are NOT deducted when: ❌ You type in the Quill panel without sending ❌ A request fails or errors ❌ You cancel a request mid-generation
Once a request completes successfully, credits cannot be refunded, even if you don’t like the output. Choose your model and prompt carefully.

Quill AI stops working until either:
  1. Your monthly credits reset (1st of the month for Free, billing date for Pro)
  2. You purchase additional credits
  3. You upgrade to Pro (if on Free plan)
Your scripts and work are never affected—only Quill AI features are paused.
No. Monthly credits expire at the end of each billing period. However, purchased credits never expire and carry forward indefinitely.
Monthly included credits are not refundable. Purchased credit packs are non-refundable once bought, but they never expire.
Each message you send costs credits based on the model—regardless of conversation length. A 10-message conversation costs 10× the per-request price.
Credits are deducted per successful request, not per quality of output. Try refining your prompt or switching models for better results.
